Yuvraj Could Play For Middlesex in T20 Cup

by Vivek Gite on February 3, 2010 · 1 comment

The county of Middlesex is in talks with Yuvraj Singh to have him play for the county in the Twenty20 tournament this year. The county had earlier approached Sachin Tendulkar to feature in the tournament, but the problem with the amount of cricket meant that the maestro had politely refused to be a part of the tournament.

Earlier, Middlesex had signed up a deal with Adam Gilchrist for the tournament, and would have bagged a double whammy had Tendulkar agreed as well. However, with Tendulkar refusing to be a part, Yuvraj Singh seems to be the next best option for the county.

However, the issue that Yuvraj Singh’s signing may also face is that the tournament will be played in July. However, during the same time, the Indians may be involved in a tri-series with Sri Lanka and another third team. This could cause a clash for Yuvraj Singh and hence till the BCCI announce the schedule, it will become difficult for Yuvraj Singh to commit to the county.
Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s director of cricket, said, “We have been in talks with Yuvraj about the possibility of him playing Twenty20 cricket this summer.”

Middlesex had not had a great previous T20 tournament as they had crashed out of the first round of the tournament. The two finalists, Sussex and Somerset had gone ahead and participated in the Champions League T20 tournament which was held in India last year. Middlesex had won the tournament in England in 2008.

The Indian cricket board has said that there is a chance they may pre-pone the Champions League T20 by one month to September. This is because India host Australia for a seven match ODI series in October. However, this could mean that the English counties may not be able to take part in the Champions League T20 tournament because of the clash it would have with the county circuit back in England. Talks are on between the ECB and BCCI to decide on how would the same progress given that the tournament had seen two English counties, Somerset and Sussex qualify for the tournament.
