Sri Lanka lost a crucial player even before their campaign in the ICC World T20 had begun as their top off-spin bowler, Muthiah Muralitharan, has been declared unfit and was ruled out of the ICC World T20 tournament due to a groin injury. Murali had sustained this injury in the game against New Zealand which was also the opening encounter of the tournament. Muralitharan will not rest for two to three weeks, and Murali may miss out of the series against New Zealand to be played in the USA.

A statement was released by the team’s physiotherapist Tommy Simsek, which said, “Clinical tests revealed a grade one strain of his right adductor muscle.”

Muralitharan, who is the deputy of the side and played their first game against the New Zealand. The Lankans had lost the first game which meant that they had to go into the second match against Zimbabwe in a must-win scenario.

Some of the results that have taken place apart from the first game between the Sri Lankans and the Kiwis are as follows:

West Indies had an easy game against New Zealand, one of the only three under lights. The West Indies side scored 138 in their 20 overs thanks to a late cameo by Darren Sammy, which looked like it could be chased. However, Ireland capitulated to the swing bowling of the West Indies to 68 all out, with Sammy picking up three more wickets.

India then beat Afghanistan by seven wickets with five overs to spare, while Pakistan ahd an easy game against Bangladesh and won by 21 runs.

India went into their second game and batted first. Thanks to a stunning century by Suresh Raina, they got to a 191 in their twenty and then, there were some strange tactics from Jacques Kallis that led to the Indian win. Raina’s century was only the third in the history of the T20I cricket.

Soon, the fourth one followed, as Mahela Jayawardene smacked a century against Zimbabwe and then rain intervened to win the game for the Sri Lankans.
