Sehwag’s 293 Sets Many Records, But Misses A Big One!

Virender Sehwag almost entered the record books when he fell seven runs short of scoring his third triple century in the history of test match cricket. No player has ever done this so far in test match cricket and Sehwag came within seven runs of doing that before the maestro Muthiah Muralitharan lulled him into playing a shot too early and giving him a return catch!

Only three batsmen – including Sehwag himself – have scored two triple centuries in test matches, Brian Lara and Don Bradman. Had Sehwag got these seven runs, he would have become the first ever batsman in 132 years to do so!

However, Bradman holds the record for the highest score apart from the two triple centuries that he had hit – an unbeaten 299 against South Africa! The last batsman was run-out while helping him complete the 300th run, something that would have given him a total of three triple centuries.

However, Sehwag did enter the record books for scoring the quickest 250 ever hit by a batsman in the history of cricket. He took 207 balls to get there, which is the fastest amongst the 75 knocks of 250 or more to have been hit in international cricket. The record for the quickest double century is held by Nathan Astle who had used up only 153 balls to get there. Sehwag got there in 168 balls. Unsurprisingly, the number three and number four positions in this list is also held by Sehwag, who took 182 and 194 balls respectively to score the double centuries he had got at Lahore and Chennai against Pakistan and South Africa respectively. In the same list, five out of the top ten quickest double centuries belong to Sehwag!

Amongst all those cricketers who have scored more than 250 in an innings, Sehwag is the only batsman to have made them at the strike rate of more than 100. In fact, he has done it thrice; this innings of 293 came off 254 balls, then there was the 319 against South Africa off 304 balls and the 254 against Pakistan off 247 balls.

Just to add to it, out of the 75 occasions that a 250 has been scored, only 34 have resulted in test match wins. Eight of the 23 scores of more than 300 have resulted in wins for their teams.
