Dravid, Dhoni Scores Centuries As India Recover To Get 400

by Vivek Gite on November 17, 2009 · 0 comments

Rahul Dravid scored an unbeaten 177 on the first day of the first Ahmedabad test match against Sri Lanka, as India recovered to post 385/6 by the time the stumps were drawn. MS Dhoni was the other centurion in the innings, as Indians recovered from their abysmal start of 32/4 and got to the realms of safety.

According to latest news, India has crashed to 426 all out early on the second day as Muthiah Muralitharan got two and Rangana Herath scalped a wicket. Welegedara had earlier added to his overnight’s three dismissals as he got rid of Rahul Dravid without any further addition to his score of 177.

Rangana Herath then got rid of Zaheer Khan with a quicker delivery, and Muralitharan had Harbhajan Singh reverse sweeping the ball on to the stumps. Ishant Sharma did not last too long then, stumped by the wicket-keeper, Prasanna Jayawardene for a duck.

Earlier yesterday, India began slowly, but lost Gambhir off an inside edge to Welegedara. Ever since Gambhir was hit by that Ricky Ponting shot at short-leg, he has not looked too comfortable and this seemed to have carried on in this series as well. Sehwag was then trapped right in front of the wickets, while Tendulkar drove the first ball he faced in his 21st year of cricket before being bowled by Welegedara. Tendulkar looked like he was still in the ODI mode and that caused his downfall. The fourth wicket to fall was of VVS Laxman, who was bowled off an inside edge as well, and that pegged the Indians back to 32/4 before the resurrection came about.

This was Dravid’s 27th test century, and he now has more than 600 runs in the last eight innings in which he has got out. This comes close on the heels of his lack of form, which he had been suffering from for the last one year before these 600 runs.

On the other hand, Dhoni got his second century in tests, but his 148 against Pakistan at Faisalabad remains his highest score in test match cricket.
