Pakistan’s parliament’s senators have said that they are confident that some of the Pakistani cricketers were involved in fixing the matches but have failed to name who the cricketers were. The Pakistan Cricket Board has said that the comments were the senators’ own and not the boards.
Even as Pakistan fumes over the non inclusion of their players, the IPL and the related stakeholders have all come out with rather contradicting statements. This has left those involved even more confused about where the whole thing went sour, and when and by whom was the decision to exclude the players taken.
The Indian government has said that it had nothing to do with the exclusion of the Pakistani players from IPL. There were 11 players from Pakistan put up in the auction list but none of them were selected by the franchises. The sports minister has said that the tournament was a private enterprise and the government had no say in the matter and its functioning.
The Pakistani cricketers have reacted with much anger about the fact that none of them were selected in the third edition of the Indian Premier League during the auctions that were held in Mumbai on Tuesday. There were 11 Pakistani cricketers in the fray, but not one was bid for as the franchises decided to play it safe, especially with the visa issues that the Pakistani players have faced in the past.
The Indian Premier League governing council has decided that there would be two extra teams for the 2011 edition of the IPL from the existing eight sides. However, what is more surprising is the fact that the base price for the bidding has been increased to $225 million. This is more than four times the base price that was set for the first edition of the IPL and more than twice the price of the costliest team in the previous IPL – the $100 plus for Mumbai Indians.
Pakistani cricketers’ participation in the next edition of the Indian Premier League has almost become a joke for now.
The third edition of the Indian Premier League will not see the Pakistani cricketers participating in it after the IPL chief Lalit Modi made an announcement to that regard. The reason behind the same is said to be the fact that the Pakistani cricketers had failed to obtain their visas for the tournament despite being given an extension date for the same.
