Dermot Reeve has been enlisted as one of the possible candidates to take over the role of the coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders from the next season. The list also contains the likes of John Wright, Richard Pybus, Michael Bevan and also India representatives like Lalchand Rajput. Rajput had earlier coached the Indian team when Greg Chappell had resigned from the position, and then had gone on to do the same with the Mumbai Indians. The Mumbai Indians incidentally have had two successive unsuccessful seasons as well.
Reeve has had the experience of coaching first class sides in the T20 format as well, while having captained his first class side in the early 1990s. He has also represented the Hong Kong team in the Super Sixes tournament, and has been one of the commentators for the Channel Four team. However, it was revealed that he had had a drug-abuse problem and had his contract annulled by the broadcasters.
The other main contender, John Wright, had been the hot favourite to get the job, but the Knigth Riders have included a clause that says that the coaches with prior experience of coaching sides in the T20 format will be preferred. Wright and Sourav Ganguly – the best choice for the Knight Riders’ captain – had earlier combined together to lead India to a world cup finals berth. Whether Ganguly will be able to convince his bosses into getting Wright back remains to be seen. Currently, Wright is with the New Zealand A side in India, participating in the Buchi Babu tournament.
Pybus had earlier coahed Pakistan, on two separate occasions. His first time with them had ended in disaster with the coach calling the board officials names, but he was called back with a change in the charge. He had also coached the Titans for the past four years, and thus, has the experience in coaching T20 sides.
The Knight Riders had a couple of abysmal seasons in the Indian Premier League, having finished sixth and eighth respectively. Buchanan, their previous coach, had been given a free hand to try out stuff, and this included the rather strange suggestion by the Aussie to get in multiple captains for the side, but had finally settled for Brendon McCullum as the captain. However, with McCullum not being present for the entire season of the 2010 edition, the captaincy should go back to Ganguly.
