The IPL has decided that it will choose the two new franchises on the 21st March, instead of doing that yesterday, which was the actual date of choosing the new teams. The decision to do so was held in abeyance after there were many pull-puts due to changes in the rules at the last moment.
The new rules that were introduced and which caused the issues for most of the potential bidders were to do with the bank guarantees and the turn-overs of the bidders. With the turnover expected to be at least $1 billion, there were many of the bidders who did not fall in that category and hence were banned from bidding. South Indian director Priyadarshan was one of those who had decided to bid for a team, but had to pull out of the same due to the new clauses.
In the end, only two companies remained in the race; the Adani Group from Gujarat and Videocon’s chief Avdhoot and his team consisting of Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor. With only these two remaining, it was only evident that the IPL would think of getting in a few more teams by relaxing the rules and that is exactly what they did.
Also, the IPL took another decision yesterday. In fact, they upheld the earlier decision to ban Ravindra Jadeja, and hence, that means that the left arm spinner will not play in the entire duration of the tournament. The Rajasthan Royals all-rounder had earlier been banned by the tournament governing council for breaking the rules around contract signings.
Jadeja’s contract was to end on 31st December, and instead of talking to Rajasthan Royals and getting a contract from them, he tried to negotiate another contract from some other sides. The IPL strictly prohibits this circumvention and they banned the 20-year old, Rajasthan Royals all-rounder.
Modi said, “Manohar did not want to set a wrong precedent, so he dismissed the request. So Jadeja now cannot play in the IPL.”
