Kolkata Knight Riders

The franchise owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Shah rukh Khan has said that there hasn’t been any decision taken yet on the captaincy or the coaching issue and the same will be up for discussion in a series of meetings between 4th August and 15th August. Earlier, there had been reports in the media that Sourav Ganguly was set to lead the side, whereas John Wright or Michael Bevan could take up the reigns as the coach.

Shah rukh Khan has said that no such decision had taken place and that the whole team will meet for the first time ever after the IPL on the 4th of August. He said that all the decisions regarding the coach and captain will be taken on the 4th and added humorously that hopefully a formula would also be worked out on how to win a few games in the next year’s season.

The Kolkata Knight Riders had been tipped as favourites in the first IPL in 2008, but had crashed to the seventh position under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly. In the second season, the coach had, quite controversially, appointed Brendon McCullum as the captain of the side, amidst talking about a multiple captaincy theory in the media. The theory was dropped, but Ganguly got the sack from the top position, only to have McCullum perform abysmally as the captain and the team came last in the second season. An angry Shah rukh Khan had left South Africa – the venue for the second edition of the IPL – in a huff due to the non-results, and the more fuel to the fire had been provided by the vitriolic blogging of the ‘fake IPL player’.

However, it does look certain that Ganguly will come back as the captain of the side, in the absence of McCullum who will miss half of the season due to international commitments. The other option could be to have Chris Gayle leading the side, but it remains to be seen whether the West Indian team has any international commitments coinciding with the IPL early next year.
